The municipality is located between 29°08’08.7″S and 19°23’27.1″E. Its administrative seat is in Pofadder, which lies approximately 220 km west of Upington and 165 km east of Springbok. The region is characterized by vast tracts of land, a pristine natural environment, and unique mountainous landscapes.
Demographics
According to the 2011 census, Khâi-Ma had a population of 12,465 people. The racial makeup was predominantly Coloured (84.1%), followed by Black African (9.6%), and White (5.4%). Afrikaans was the most spoken language, with 96.1% of the population using it as their first language.
Economy
The economy of Khâi-Ma is primarily based on agriculture and mining. Farming settlements such as Dwagga Soutpan, Vrugbaar, Raap-en-Skraap, and Klein Pella contribute to the agricultural sector. Mining activities, including the extraction of diamonds and other minerals, are present in various phases within the municipality.
Governance
The municipal council consists of seven members elected by mixed-member proportional representation. Four councillors are elected by first-past-the-post voting in four wards, and the remaining three are chosen from party lists to ensure proportional representation. The African National Congress (ANC) won a majority of five seats in the 2021 municipal elections.
